REVIEW
When I reviewed the first book in this series a few
months ago I gave it glowing praise, and that praise extends on to its sequel
SONS. The characters from the first book return along with a few new ones and
the story grows, deepening your feelings for Jan and his world of family and of
intrigue.
In SONS we have duel meaning because you see the
duel relationship of Jan and his newfound son Colin as well as that of the villainous
Louis and his controlling father Victor.
Sons can be built or broken by their relationships with their fathers
and I think that this is in large part what the author is saying with this
incredible book.
As many of the readers of this blog know my own
father has been ill for some time now and this book had a deep meaning for me
because of this. He is recovering nicely
now and we expect him to be able to come home in a few more weeks after being
hospitalized for over a month. My point
is, I have always had a good relationship with my father though at various time
we were emotionally distant because I did not grow up to be the “all American
boy”. He never held it against me, even
when he found out I was gay, he didn’t reject me in any way.
Good fathers, real fathers, love their sons no
matter what and we see this in the book by the end in how Jan related to Colin
and even more so in how Victor related to Louis.
Michael Halfhill is an amazing author and I am amazed
he hasn’t written more than he has. I
look forward to the next Jan Phillips book with great enthusiasm.
